Ondo community laments rising hoodlum attacks

The residents of Ìrele community in the Ìrele Local Government Area of Ondo State are sounding the alarm over escalating attacks, with reports of injuries and destruction of farmlands by suspected hoodlums.

In telephone interviews on Thursday, some residents expressed fear as the attacks have become frequent, prompting many to flee the area for safer locations.

Originally under Ikale Local Government Area with headquarters in Okitipupa, Irele community became a separate local government in 1991 following the Federal Government’s creation of more local governments. However, the recent surge in attacks has left residents anxious and seeking intervention.

Multiple videos shared through WhatsApp messages with our correspondent show the aftermath of the attacks, including razed houses, destroyed motorcycles, and damaged plantain plantations and wooden canoes used for transportation. Mr. Fashadeju Wokan, one of the community residents, lamented the lack of action from the police despite repeated reports of attacks. He described how the attackers, masked and armed, target the community sporadically, causing chaos and destruction before retreating.

The Baale of Eyinrowo, Chief Samuel Akinduyigbe, emphasized the impact of the attacks on farming activities, with residents now afraid to venture into their farms. He called for government intervention to curb the violence and restore peace to the community. Similarly, the Igbeleju of Irele, Chief Tola Omogunwa, highlighted the community’s plight, noting the destruction of property and farmlands, and the terrorizing of residents by the attackers.

In response, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ibukun Odunlami, urged residents to escalate their complaints to the area command if they feel their reports are not adequately addressed. This comes amid growing concerns over the security situation in Ìrele community and the need for swift action to protect residents and their livelihoods.
