Suspected rapist of mentally-challenged minor arrested in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command announced on Wednesday the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Sanusi Umar, for allegedly raping a mentally-challenged 10-year-old boy (name withheld). Ahmed Wakil, the command’s spokesperson, revealed this in a press release, stating that Umar was apprehended by operatives attached to Operation Restore Peace in the state.

Wakil explained that Umar enticed the victim with a N30 sweet and persuaded him to accompany him to an isolated area behind the AIB filling station along Kofar Ran under the guise of defecating. Subsequently, the suspect forced the victim to undress and sexually assaulted him from behind.

Upon the assault, the victim promptly sought help from the filling station manager, reporting the incident. Further investigations unveiled that the suspect, originally from Jingino village in the Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State, had been residing in Bauchi for about two years, where he sold garden eggs at the AIB filling station.

Wakil emphasized that the suspect exploited the victim’s mental condition to commit the crime.

The victim was immediately taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for medical examinations alongside the suspect.

The police spokesperson concluded by stating that investigations are ongoing, and once completed, the suspect will be prosecuted in court.
