Nigerian govt announces increase in electricity tariff

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved an increase in electricity rates for customers in the Band A category. Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. The new adjustment will see customers paying N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant increase from the current rate of N66.

Oseni revealed that the number of feeders categorized as Band A will be reduced from 800 to under 500. This adjustment means that only 17 percent of feeders will now qualify as Band A, serving just 15 percent of total electricity customers connected to those feeders.

Additionally, NERC has issued an order titled “April Supplementary Order,” allowing for a consumption limit of 235 kilowatt-hours per hour.
