French Football Federation overturns Lyons’ relegation

Olympique Lyonnais will remain in Ligue 1 after the French Football Federation (FFF) overturned their relegation to Ligue 2 on Wednesday, following a successful appeal by the club.

As part of the decision, the FFF has implemented financial restrictions on Lyon, placing limits on their wage bill and transfer spending in the club’s proposed budget for the 2025/2026 Ligue 1 season.

“Olympique Lyonnais welcomes today’s decision by the DNCG to keep the club in Ligue 1,” Lyon said in a statement.

“Olympique Lyonnais would like to thank the Appeals Committee for recognising the ambition of the club’s new management team, which is determined to ensure that the club is managed seriously in the future.”

Lyon were initially relegated by French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, last November over serious financial concerns. The decision was upheld in June following a key meeting between club owner and American businessman John Textor and DNCG officials.

In a major leadership shake-up, Michele Kang—renowned for her influence in women’s football and owner of OL Lyonnais Féminin—has taken over as president of Olympique Lyonnais, succeeding Textor at the helm.
