Ogun Teachers Embark on Indefinite Strike

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogun State wing, has shut down all public primary and secondary schools across the state as teachers begin an indefinite strike, Tuesday, 15th July 2025.

The union in a statement said the action became inevitable after the state government allegedly failed to address critical demands affecting thousands of teachers’ livelihoods and future retirement benefits.

The strike, which took effect from midnight, has left parents and pupils stranded as classrooms remain locked. The NUT leadership said it had exhausted all avenues for dialogue, accusing the government of neglecting issues that include stoppage of the contributory pension scheme, unpaid leave allowances for eight years, stalled promotions, and the failure to implement a new minimum wage.

“Therefore, in line with the decision of Organised Labour through a joint Workers’ Parliament held on the 14th June, 2025 that all Public and Civil Servants should withdraw their services to press home the demands of workers on: Stoppage of Contributory Pension Scheme; Payment of New Minimum Wage different from Wage Award; Payment of Outstanding eight years Leave Allowance; Immediate Implementation of already approved 2023 and 2024 promotions that was staggered; and Consequential adjustment on minimum pension.”

“After exhausting all avenues for resolving industrial issues, particularly concerning Contributory Pension and other challenges as stated above, the leadership of the Union hereby directs all Primary and Secondary School Teachers to withdraw their services by staying at home starting from 12:00am on Tuesday, 15th July 2025.”

“As events unfold, we will continue to communicate with you while assuring you that this action is lawful and aimed at pressing home our fundamental rights from our employer. We urge you not to entertain any fear.”

“We thank you for your usual cooperation and rest assured of the leadership’s commitment to secure a reliable future for all.”
