Rivers police arrest suspect who gang-raped pregnant woman to death

The Rivers State Police Command has announced the arrest of Emeka, who is suspected of raping and killing a pregnant woman, Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward.

Reports indicate that Emeka, along with a gang, allegedly assaulted the victim in the Abarikpo community of Ahoada East Local Government Area.

Our correspondent learned that Emeka had a disagreement with Mrs. Steward on February 12, 2023. Later that night, he and his gang broke into her house, kidnapped her, and took her to an unknown location where they allegedly raped her to death.

Emeka fled the community when he realized the police were pursuing him but was apprehended 15 months later after his whereabouts were discovered.

Mrs. Steward’s husband, Lawyer Steward, who is a pastor in Abarikpo community, confirmed the arrest in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday, appealing to the government to ensure justice is served.

He said, “Emeka, the mastermind behind my wife’s death, quarreled with her because she called him a wicked man. He told my wife that she would see wickedness that day.

“That night around 1 a.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2023, those bad boys came to my house, broke the door, and took my wife away.

“My wife was five months pregnant. Emeka and his gang raped and strangled her to death. The police arrested him on Thursday. Now he is in police custody. I have given my statement at the station. I want the government to intervene so that justice will prevail.”

He noted that his wife’s body was discovered near a fishing pond hours after her abduction, with multiple bruises and bleeding from her private parts.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said investigations were ongoing, adding that Emeka has been arrested and the matter will be transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.
