Man Stabs Friend to Death Over N2,500 Debt in Lagos

A man named Taiwo Badejo has allegedly stabbed his friend, identified only as Monday, to death over a N2,500 debt in the Oko Oba area of Lagos State.

It was reported that Badejo and Monday were arguing over the money when the disagreement escalated into a fight on Friday.

Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, Tope Ajise, a resident of Egbatedo Street in the Old Oko Oba area where the incident occurred, said that people attempted to calm the two men, but the situation worsened.

Ajise said, “The argument started the night before Friday, and by morning, we heard that Taiwo had stabbed Monday. It was over N2,500. He borrowed the money from Monday, who came to collect it. That’s when Taiwo picked up a knife and stabbed him. The man bled to death. Taiwo is known in the area; he has a twin brother.”

Another resident, Taofeek, described the suspect as one of the local men with no steady source of income.

“They just hang around, asking for money, and eating. There are many like him in this area without a tangible source of income. When incidents like this happen, it often stems from joblessness. As they say, an idle hand is the devil’s workshop,” Taofeek remarked.

Another resident, who requested anonymity due to his connection with the deceased’s family, said Taiwo was promptly arrested by members of the Yoruba vigilante group, the Oodua People’s Congress.

He explained, “They were friends, but things got out of hand. The incident occurred early in the morning. Taiwo was apprehended by the Oodua People’s Congress and taken to the local police station, likely the Abattoir Police Station.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that the suspect, Taiwo Badejo, had been arrested and the case was under investigation.

“The suspect, Taiwo Badejo, has been arrested. The case is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti,” Hundeyin told our correspondent.

In similar incidents, last December, Eboh Joshua was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend Adeyeye Adedolapo in the Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos.

Another case involved a man named John, who was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend, Akinola Adeleye, after a dispute over who should pay for a meal at a restaurant in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area. Following the argument, Akinola stabbed John to death, and the suspect was later arrested and arraigned in court.
