OAU Management Calls for Calm After Campus Accident

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has urged calm following an accident on campus on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, it was reported that heavy rainfall caused the ceiling of the Amphitheatre to collapse, injuring several students.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, along with other principal officers, visited the university’s medical and health centre where the injured students were treated. Bamire assured the university community that the injured students received adequate medical attention.

He also advised students and staff to continue their academic and administrative activities as usual, noting that the Amphitheatre has been sealed off until further notice.

The statement reads: “The torrential rainfall on Thursday morning, accompanied by a whirlwind, caused the ceiling of the Amphitheatre in Oduduwa Hall to collapse while students were attending a lecture, resulting in injuries to several students.

“Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, along with other principal officers, promptly visited the Medical and Health Centre to ensure the injured students received adequate medical attention. Two students requiring further treatment were taken to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), where Chief Medical Director, Professor John Okeniyi, supervised their care.

“The Vice Chancellor has appealed for calm and urged students and staff to continue their activities as usual. Meanwhile, the Amphitheatre has been sealed off until further notice.”
