The Lagos State Government has unveiled a discount and amnesty program designed to incentivize property owners to obtain necessary permits and adhere to building regulations. Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, made the announcement during a press briefing marking the first anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
The initiative aims to bolster public safety and foster a sustainable urban environment by promoting compliance with building regulations.
Concerns were raised by Olumide regarding the lack of approvals for approximately 80% of buildings in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos.Under the program, civil servants are eligible for a 40% rebate on planning permits to encourage adherence to proper procedures for property ownership.
Property owners with unpermitted buildings are also granted a 90-day amnesty period to apply for permits without facing penalties, aiming to address existing non-compliance issues and promote a regulated building environment.
During the amnesty period, owners and developers of existing buildings can obtain planning permits without incurring statutory penal fees.
Additionally, a five percent discount is available for payments completed within 10 working days of the bill’s issuance.
These measures seek to streamline the permit acquisition process and facilitate timely compliance with building regulations.
