The University of Abuja was struck by tragedy when Murjanatu Zubairu, a fourth-year student in the Department of Arts Education, was reported missing on Friday. The somber news was compounded by the discovery of her demise in a car accident along the Lugbe – Airport Road, Abuja. Zubairu’s family had been grappling with her disappearance, unaware of her fate until Monday.
Confirming the heartbreaking development, Zubairu’s uncle, Zubairu Yewuti, disclosed that the family received the devastating news of her passing in an accident on the fateful Friday. Her remains were identified at the mortuary of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The accident, which occurred at 8:34 p.m., involved a speeding Toyota Sharon bus near the Dunamis Church along the Airport Road. Tragically, the bus burst into flames, claiming the lives of Zubairu and three others.
Efforts to save the victims were initiated promptly, with six survivors receiving immediate medical attention for burns sustained in the accident. The Lugbe Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Sunday Ajokotola, coordinated the rescue operation, ensuring that the injured were transported to the hospital.
Yewuti recounted the family’s desperate attempts to locate Zubairu, including reporting her disappearance to the university authorities and security agencies. Despite their efforts, they were met with silence, compounding their anguish. The family appealed to the public for any information that could shed light on Zubairu’s whereabouts, urging individuals to contact the nearest police station with relevant details.
