The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has arrested two traders when its operatives demolished shops built around Akiogun Road, Oniru in the Etyi-Osa Local Government Area of the state
This was disclosed in a post on the official X handle of the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday.
In a video seen by our correspondent, while the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps workers began demolishing the stores, some vendors could be seen attempting to save their goods.
The post added that during a morning patrol at the Lekki-Ajah area, some officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps demolished some kiosks along Chevron Drive.
Tokunbo stated that after the traders were driven out last week, they moved back to the same location and that two people were arrested.
“While on monitoring and enforcement duty in the Lekki – Ajah axis this morning, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps noticed some street traders who were dislodged last week are now regrouping along Chevron Drive. The area has been cleared again and two people have been arrested.”
In a similar development, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office sealed the Carillion Construction office building at Victoria Island for illegally discharging sewage into the public drainage system using a pumping machine.
“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office today, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, sealed off the office building of Carrillion Construction at Plot 10b, T.F Kuboye Street, Oniru Extension, Victoria Island after it was discovered that the building had been carrying out illegal discharge of sewage into the public drainage via a pumping machine.
He noted that operatives of the Special Offenses Taskforce and other agencies removed illegal structures on the drainage setback of Somide Odujinrin on Tuesday in response to a petition from the Omole Phase Two Community Development Association.
“Acting on a petition from Omole Phase II Community Development Association, operatives from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resource, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, and the Environment and Special Offences Taskforce, on Tuesday, removed all illegal structures on the drainage setback of Somide Odujinrin Avenue leading into the estate,” he said.
Tokunbo noted that the Lagos State Government would not tolerate the illegal release of untreated sewage into the public drainage system.
“The Lagos State Government reiterates its zero tolerance for illegally discharging untreated sewage wastewater into the public drains and water bodies. Citizens are therefore advised to desist from this unlawful act and serious act of degradation of our environment.”
PUNCH Metro had reported that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps had cleared illegal structures built around the fence of Salvation Army Primary School, Ayobo, Ipaja area of the state recently.
