The faction of the New Nigeria People’s Party, led by Major Agbo, announced the suspension of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf for six months on Tuesday, citing his failure to appear before the disciplinary committee to address alleged infractions on the party’s constitution. The suspension was declared by the faction’s National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, during a press conference in Abuja.
Olaposi emphasized that the decision to suspend Governor Yusuf was made in the party’s best interest by the Board of Trustees. He expressed concern over Yusuf’s participation in an unauthorized national convention of the Kwankwasiya group led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso in Abuja on April 6.
He stated, “We are briefing the media on recent developments regarding Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s failure to appear before the disciplinary committee to explain infractions on the party’s constitution. His participation in an illegal national convention of NNPP led by the Kwankwasiya group has prompted this action.”
Olaposi further explained that in line with the NNPP Constitution 2022 as amended, and with the approval of the Board of Trustees and the unanimous decision of the National Working Committee, Governor Abba Yusuf is suspended for six months with immediate effect.
In response, Dipo Olayoku, the National Secretary of the Kwankwasiyya faction of NNPP, dismissed the suspension as baseless, describing the faction that issued it as expelled members of the party. He refuted their authority to suspend Governor Yusuf, stating that they lack credibility as they are not recognized members of the NNPP.
