Ten things to know about FAAN’s new e-tags for airport access

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Friday, May 17, began selling 2024 e-tags for entry into Nigeria’s 24 federal airports.

FAAN stated that this initiative aligns with a presidential directive approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Here’s a thorough explanation of what you should know about these e-tags:

1. Purpose of E-Tags
An E-tag, or electronic tag, is designed for the electronic collection of gate fees, allowing vehicles to pass through gates without stopping. This system helps reduce traffic congestion and speeds up the collection process.

2. Where e-tags are used

Currently, E-tags are only implemented at Lagos and Abuja airports. For other airports in Nigeria, entrance stickers are available instead.

3. Who must pay the entrance fees
Every motorist entering the airport area is required to pay the entrance gate.

4. Payment methods
Entrance gate fees can be paid by cash or card. There are payment machines at the entrance gates for card payments.

5. Mandatory nature of e-Tags
While E-tags provide a convenient way to pass through gates, they are not mandatory. Motorists can choose to pay in cash or by card at the entrance gate.

6. Non-transferability of E-Tags
E-tags are registered to specific vehicles and must be affixed to the driver’s side windshield to be valid for entry.

7. Additional parking fees
Purchasing an E-tag grants you access to the airport, but does not cover parking costs. Parking rates are separate, except for VIP tags, which provide access to the VIP parking lot.

8. Validity of E-Tags
E-tags are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

9. How to buy e-tags
E-tags can be purchased at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, HOD Commercial Office (General Aviation Terminal). Contact: +234 803 463 3527, +234 813 756 1615 and the Murtala Muhammed Airport, HOD Commercial Office (5th Floor). Contact: +234 803 371 3796, +234 802 354 6030.

10. Business hours for purchasing E-Tags:
The offices are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

These e-tags are part of FAAN’s efforts to improve airport operations and improve the overall experience for airport users.
