A shocking incident has left residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State reeling after 55-year-old Etim Mary was brutally murdered by her husband, Matthew James, over suspicions of infidelity.
The gruesome act occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, James suspected that his wife was having an extramarital affair and took matters into his own hands.
An anonymous eyewitness revealed that James claimed he and his wife had a “blood covenant” not to betray each other, and that he killed her out of loyalty to their marriage.
The witness described the horrific scene, saying that James returned home with a machete and hacked his wife to death.
He allegedly didn’t flee the scene but stood beside her body instead. Police officers from the Ijebu-Igbo Division took James into custody.
The state police command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident, stating that the wife was found lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on her forehead, shoulders, and other parts of her body.
Her body was taken to a hospital in Ijebu-Igbo, where she was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta once the preliminary investigation is concluded.
This incident bears some similarities to a previous case in April where a suspect named Dare Onipede allegedly killed his wife, Arinola, during a dispute over accusations of infidelity.
