Two artisans, Toheeb Yekini, 35, and Yekini Sulikaleni, 30, said to be an ex-convict, both from Iwo, Osun State, have been arrested by the operatives of Amotekun corps for alleged burglary and theft.
The suspects were reportedly arrested at the Oje Oniyan area of Iwo following a tip-off by the residents, who alerted Amotekun operatives about the attack on a shop in the community.
In a statement by the Osun Amotekun spokesperson, Idowu Yusuf, on Wednesday, the corps said the operatives that responded to the distress call from the Oniyan area arrested the suspects after they broke into a shop and stole items kept inside.
The release read partly, “The Operatives of Osun Amotekun Corps have arrested two young men identified as Toheeb Yekini, 35 years old, and Yekini Sulikaleni, 30 years old, both from Iwo, Osun State, for burgling a shop.
“The suspects were arrested on Tuesday at the Oje Oniyan Area of Iwo after the operatives of Amotekun, Iwo Command received a distress call around 11:30 am on the activities of the felons in the area.
The Amotekun operatives who swung into action immediately, apprehended the suspects at the scene of the crime.
“The suspects confessed to committing the crime and pleaded for mercy. The suspects have been handed over to the DSS for subsequent interrogation and prosecution. One is a welder, while the other is a bricklayer.”Commenting, the corps commander, Brig. Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi (retd.), said the suspects were apprehended while in the act.During an investigation, Adewinbi said, “The suspects admitted to committing the crime.
They said it was not the first time they would commit the same act. One of the suspects, Sulikaleni, was an ex-convict jailed for the same act in the past.”
He urged residents to assist security agencies with timely intelligence that would prevent crimes in the state.
On Sunday, May 5, Adewinbi said operatives had arrested one Adegoroye Akinola on the suspicion that he defrauded nine people of the sum of N1.5m.The spokesperson, who announced the arrest in a release, said the suspect carried out the act on the pretence of assisting the victims to process the Corporate Affairs Commission’s registration and procure passport.
