AFCON: We have plan to stop Osimhen – Tanzania coach

Tanzania head coach, Manuel Gomandi, says his team has mapped out a strategy to contain Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 clash with Nigeria.

Gomandi spoke at a press conference on the eve of the Group C encounter, admitting that while stopping Osimhen is a priority, Nigeria’s attacking depth makes the task difficult.

“We have a tactical plan to try to neutralise Victor Osimhen, but it’s not only him,” Gomandi said. “You have players like Chukwueze and Lookman. If one is neutralised, the other is attacking.”

Nigeria head into the match as one of the favourites, with a frontline known for pace and power. The Tanzanian coach warned that any lapse in concentration could prove costly against the Super Eagles.

“Our mentality is to try to play and attack as well. We must be tactically disciplined and avoid mistakes, because the quality in the Nigerian team can punish you,” he added.

Despite the challenge, Gomandi expressed confidence in his squad, saying his players are ready for the test.

“We are more than ready for tomorrow’s game. It is a very difficult match, but it is a good challenge for us,” he said.

Nigeria and Tanzania will face off in their opening Group C match as both teams seek to make a strong start at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament.
