Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed the possibility of forming a coalition or merging with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This stance was solidified during the PDP Governors’ Forum’s fourth meeting of the year, held on Monday, April 15, in Ibadan, Oyo State. The gathering, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, included governors and deputy governors from ten PDP-led states.
Amid rising talks of potential political alliances, the Forum affirmed the PDP’s readiness to contest the 2027 elections independently, asserting its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party. However, the governors emphasized that the party remains open to welcoming individuals, parties, or groups seeking to join its cause to reclaim power and promote better governance.
On internal party affairs, the Forum endorsed the Deputy National Secretary to act as National Secretary temporarily, pending the selection and confirmation of a permanent replacement from the South East.
The governors also raised concerns over the legality of imposing a state of emergency, revealing plans to seek clarification from the Supreme Court. They pledged unwavering support to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, condemning the political unrest in the state and calling it a targeted campaign against him.
Addressing national security, the Forum highlighted escalating violence in Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo States. They urged the federal government to rethink its security strategy and empower state governments to take a more proactive role.
The governors condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and offered condolences to affected communities, stressing the urgent need for decisive action.
Looking ahead, the PDP’s National Executive Committee is scheduled to meet on May 27, 2025, to deliberate on zoning arrangements and other strategic matters. A national convention has also been slated for August 28–30 in Kano.
To this end, two key committees have been constituted:
Zoning Committee: Gov. Douye Diri (Chairman), Gov. Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman), and Gov. Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary).
National Convention Committee: Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Gov. Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman), and Gov. Peter Mbah (Secretary).
The Forum expressed gratitude to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for hosting the meeting and commended the hospitality of the people of Oyo State.
