Israel denies targeting religious sites after strike hits Gaza church

The Israeli government has expressed regret over civilian casualties and damage to religious infrastructure following a recent strike on the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, while denying that religious sites are deliberately targeted.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, Israel conveyed “deep sorrow over the damage [to the church] and over any civilian casualty,” following reports that multiple people were injured in the attack, including four seriously.

“Israel never targets churches or religious sites and regrets any harm to a religious site or to uninvolved civilians,” the ministry said, stating that a formal investigation into the incident has been launched.

“The IDF is examining this incident, the circumstances of which are still unclear, and the results of the investigation will be published transparently,” it added.

  • NELFUND to give beneficiaries access to employment opportunity in portal

NELFUND to give beneficiaries access to employment opportunity in portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, says the agency is developing a centralised job portal to give beneficiaries early access to employment opportunities in Nigeria and abroad, although it does not guarantee jobs.

The Managing Director, NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr made this known during a media engagement series in Abuja on Thursday to mark one year since the scheme’s launch.

Sawyerr said the portal would aggregate listings from the public and private sectors, as well as international employers interested in recruiting Nigerians.

“We don’t just give a loan and leave students on their own. This job portal is our way of supporting their journey toward economic stability,” he said.

He emphasised that students would only begin repayment after securing employment, stressing that this would begin after their National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

“If you don’t have a job, you don’t pay. And when you eventually get a job, your repayment starts fresh.

“Once employed, 10 per cent of the beneficiary’s monthly income is deducted automatically by the employer and remitted to NELFUND, following verification through the NELFUND employment register.

“If an employee is laid off or resigns, the deductions stop. And in the event of death, the loan is written off. The family is not harassed,” Sawyerr added.

Speaking on non-refund of fees to students who had paid before NELFUND disbursed to their institutions, the managing director appealed to institutions to return the fees to students.

According to him, schools have a moral and professional duty to return these funds to students.

“We’ve received multiple petitions from students who paid under duress only to find their fees had also been paid by NELFUND.

“Institutions must refund this money. It’s disappointing that some schools have ignored this responsibility,” he said.

He noted that investigative bodies like the ICPC and EFCC have stepped in to question certain institutions over delays or refusals to refund.

“If an institution cannot refund directly to the student, they can pay the money back to us and we will ensure it gets to the rightful student,” Sawyerr stated.

Speaking on the agency’s projection in the coming years, the Executive Director, Operations at NELFUND, Mustapha Iyal, said the Fund is currently managing over 3.2 million student records in its system.

Iyal, however, said the Fund is projecting one million new applications by the end of 2025.

While he said the figure was not compulsory, adding that the Fund aimed to ensure no student drops out due to financial hardship.

“Basically, our projection right now, we have about 3.2 million data students in our system.

“What we’re looking at this year, from now to the end of the year, we’re looking at about 1 million applications. We’re not pushing. We’re not saying that it’s compulsory.

“But we’re looking at how we can support 1 million applications to make sure that no one is dropping out of school,” he said

  • Tinubu: Nigerians happier, faring better than during PDP era – APC chieftain

Tinubu: Nigerians happier, faring better than during PDP era – APC chieftain

Amid the biting Economic hardship in the country, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, George Agbakahi, has claimed that things are now better and Nigerians happier than during the Peoples Democratic Party era.

Agbakahi claimed that President Bola Tinubu has done far better for the betterment of Nigeria than the previous governments.

The APC chieftain stated this on Thursday while fielding questions on Arise Television’s News programme.

He said: “Of course, Nigeria of today is a lot better than Nigeria of the PDP days. Yes, look at some of the initiatives that the current president has put in place.

“During the PDP days, did you ever hear about student loan? Let’s be sincere. The President has put a lot of smiles on the faces of Nigerian parents.

“In the history of Nigeria, apart from the student loan that is related to the tertiary institutions, vocational and technical institutions currently are free. People are going in there to learn carpentry, to learn welding. It’s free, free of charge.

“Look at the CNG, Compressed Natural Gas. Look at the electric vehicles. Did we have this during the PDP? Yes, we didn’t have this during the PDP.

“There is a whole lot that this President has done, you know, for the betterment of this country.

When reminded that more Nigerians are now living in multi dimensional poverty than in the PDP days, Agbakahi continued: “Oh, come on. You know the reason for that is because of the extrication of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate, which I have adduced to you earlier on, that President Obasanjo, President Yar’adua, President Goodluck Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari of blessed memory, they all knew that it was vital to remove all these subsidies. They all knew we were just having an artificial economy during this you know, years of other presidents.

“President Tinubu, came in and looked at it and found out that it was just the best way to go. He even said it would be tough but now it is easing up.

“Truly, it is easing up. That’s why you have all these initiatives. You know, look at the Bank of Industry. Look at the Bank of Agriculture. You know, 200 billion naira have been brought by the Bank of Industry. You know, for small and medium enterprises in this country, they’re all benefiting from it.

“Look at the youth fund. The youth fund of about 100 billion naira, many youths are taking advantage of all this, so that is difference. There are no way you can compare the PDP days and this current administration. No no no, it’s not doable. You cannot do that.”

  • Anambra Gov’t calls Peter Obi a liar over highest tax payer claim

Anambra Gov’t calls Peter Obi a liar over highest tax payer claim

The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has publicly refuted a claim by former Governor Peter Obi that SABMiller Breweries is the highest taxpayer in the state.

In a statement released to clarify the matter on Thursday, the AIRS presented data showing that the brewery is, in fact, the sixth-highest corporate taxpayer.

The clarification came after the Service noted claims circulating in the public domain. According to data from 2023 and 2024, SABMiller paid a total of N656.5 million in taxes over the two-year period, placing it in a “distant sixth position.”

The former Anambra State governor stated this last Friday while addressing a gathering of Labour Party stalwarts and supporters at the All Saints Cathedral field, Onitsha, Anambra State, during the campaign flag-off of Labour Party candidate for the November 8, 2025 governorship election in the state, Dr George Moghalu, and his running mate.

“You can assess yourselves, governance for me is about compassion and empathy, caring for the lowly, petty traders. It is not these same poor masses you tax. Instead of ensuring they feed well and go to school.

“I have governed Anambra State and I don’t boast of things I didn’t do, they are verifiable.

The AIRS stated that this amounted to an average monthly payment of N28 million in 2023 and N26.62 million in 2024, a contribution it deemed insufficient to support the claim.

The Service’s data indicates that Fidelity Bank Plc holds the top position as the highest corporate taxpayer in the state. The clarification, according to the AIRS, was necessary to provide “undiluted information for members of the public to note” and to properly address the claims made by the former governor.

The AIRS also stressed the significant growth in its internally generated revenue (IGR) under the current administration.

The Service has seen monthly tax collections consistently rise from a previous range of N1.5 billion to N2.08 billion to a current average of N4 billion per month, with an all-time high of N10.5 billion recorded in May 2025.

“The attention of the Service has been drawn to some public domain of claims regarding the fact that SABMiller Breweries is the highest taxpayer in the State. For the avoidance of doubts, while the Service has made very monumental strides in increasing the internally generally revenue of the State from its very low ebb of between 1.5B to 2.08 per month, and even much lower in the previous years, the tax collection has consistently moved up to 4B per month and with an all-time high of 10.5B in the month of May, 2025.

“A double-check on the last two years data (see table below) on tax collections across corporate bodies including SABMiller but excluding Federal Institutions which contribute hugely to the State’s IGR, especially the pay as you carn (PAYE) taxes, showed the position of the top 6 taxpayers in the State.

“Interestingly, SABMiller company comes a distant sixth position behind Fidelity bank Ple with a gross tax payment of N656.5M in two years (2023 and 2024). In this sense, the claim can be dissmissd with a wave of hand as the company in question contributed on the average, N28M per month in 2023 and N26.62M per month in 2024.”

This revenue growth, the state government noted, excludes taxes from federal institutions which also contribute significantly to the state’s IGR, particularly through the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system.

  • BREAKING: Defence HQ Breaks Silence on Alleged Emergence of New Terror Group

BREAKING: Defence HQ Breaks Silence on Alleged Emergence of New Terror Group

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has responded to recent claims by Turkey’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, regarding the alleged operation of a terrorist group within Nigerian borders.

Poroy, while speaking during Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day, alleged that members of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), a group outlawed in Turkey, had migrated and were operating in Nigeria under the guise of running educational and healthcare institutions.

According to him, “The presence of such an organisation poses a threat to every country in which it operates… particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.”

Reacting to the claim on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said the Defence Headquarters does not treat the ambassador’s comments as an official position or a verified security threat.

“Information from the person you are talking about, as far as Defence Headquarters is concerned, is an unofficial announcement. Everybody is free to say whatever they want. There is freedom of information,” Kangye said.

He stressed that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and fully capable of making its own assessments on matters of national security and terrorism without foreign interference.

“Nigeria is an independent sovereign nation that can think and act for itself,” he added.

While acknowledging the country’s international ties, Kangye warned against uncritically accepting foreign claims that have not been corroborated by Nigeria’s own intelligence community. He emphasized that security decisions would be based solely on Nigeria’s internal assessments and strategic interests.

“We cannot take what other people are saying about Nigeria and accept it without our own independent assessment. Nigeria knows what it is, and the Nigerian military has its own code of conduct and operational guidelines,” he said.

Kangye cautioned that such foreign comments could be part of efforts to influence public perception or policy.

“There are propagandists all over the world. Psychological oppressions go on everywhere. That’s why we must be vigilant,” he said.
