Senate, Reps postpone plenary for 2026 budget defence

The Senate and the House of Representatives have postponed plenary sittings to allow lawmakers focus on the defence and detailed scrutiny of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

The National Assembly is scheduled to resume full plenary on Wednesday, March 5, 2026.

The decision follows the presentation of the 2026 budget proposal by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said the break is necessary to ensure thorough, transparent and people centred consideration of the budget.

They assured that legislative activities such as oversight functions and committee engagements will continue during the period.

The recess also provides members the opportunity to engage their constituents on national issues.

The 2026 Appropriation Bill, tagged the “Budget of Restoration,” is valued at ₦54.99 trillion and is expected to be passed before the end of the first quarter in line with the revised fiscal calendar.
