PDP has never lost election in Nasarawa — Maku
Former Minister of Information and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Labaran Maku, has stated that the PDP has never truly lost any election in Nasarawa State, insisting that the grassroots support for the party remains unwavering.
Maku made the assertion during the inauguration of key party committees, including the State Reconciliation and Finance Committees, held in Lafia on Thursday.
“I know that if there is an election today or tomorrow, PDP will win,” Maku declared. “Forget about the sirens and motorcades; those don’t represent the vote of the people. Every time I go to the villages and speak with the people, they still say they are looking forward to voting PDP. That’s why I say PDP has never lost an election in Nasarawa State.”
He stressed that serving in any capacity to revive the fortunes of the party ahead of 2027 is a collective responsibility, adding that personal interests must give way for unity and reconciliation.
“We are determined to serve the party in any capacity. Even if they say we should sweep the streets of Lafia so PDP can win, we will do it,” he said. “The most important thing is not about us, but about the ordinary people—our parents, brothers, and sisters—who are suffering now because PDP is no longer in power.”
While emphasizing the need for unity and internal healing, Maku urged members not to rejoice when fellow members defect or become estranged from the party.
“When you lose one member of the party, you are reducing your strength. It is our duty—whether you’re on the reconciliation committee or not—to reach out to aggrieved persons and bring them back,” he said.
The reconciliation committee, chaired by Alhaji Sule Nasidi of the State Elders Forum, is tasked with healing internal party divisions, especially following the recent Appeal Court ruling. The court, sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, on Monday, May 5, 2025, dismissed a case filed by 16 aggrieved party members, ruling that the matter was intra-party and outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary.
Also inaugurated was the Finance Committee, chaired by Maku, with Alhaji Ahmed Galadima serving as secretary. Another strategic committee is headed by former PDP State and North-Central Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Ayitogo, with Barrister Aaron Ayaga as secretary.
Each committee is expected to carry out its assignment within a one-month timeline under specific terms of reference provided by the State Working Committee (SWC).
Speaking on behalf of the committee members, Alhaji Sule Nasidi expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence reposed in them.
“We are humbled by this responsibility and pledge our commitment to deliver on the assignment,” Nasidi said. “We urge party members to allow love for one another to guide us. This is the only way to guarantee a united platform that will return PDP to power and bring good governance to the people.”
Earlier, the State PDP Chairman, Hon. Adamu Bako Ninga, said he was overwhelmed by the calibre of persons invited to serve on the committees.
“I chose people with credibility and capacity to bring peace and financial strength to the party. The aim is to take back power and save the people from hardship,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of unity, calling on all members to support the committees’ work.
“If I have offended anyone, I ask for forgiveness—for the interest of the party,” Ninga appealed. “I did not celebrate the Appeal Court victory because there’s nothing to celebrate yet. What we should celebrate is when PDP returns to the Government House in 2027.”
The party chairman then formally inaugurated the committees and charged members to work diligently for the success of the party.
