Gunmen kill 2 Chinese, policeman in Abia, 4 expatriates rescued

Gunmen attacked and killed two Chinese nationals and a policeman on Friday, 4 April 2025, in Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu Community, Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. Security forces later rescued four Chinese expatriates and two police officers.

Abia State Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka confirmed the incident in a statement. She said the attack occurred around 5:30pm as the group travelled to a company site. “Some Chinese nationals were en route to their company site at Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu Community, Uturu, with their police escort, when they were ambushed and attacked by unidentified armed men,” Chinaka noted.

The gunmen killed the company manager, Mr Quan, his colleague Mr Cai, and Inspector Audu Saidu, an escort officer. They also stole Saidu’s rifle. “Upon receiving the information, operatives from Abia State Command, in a joint operation with the military and other sister agencies, launched a search mission,” Chinaka added. “As a result, three Chinese expatriates were rescued unhurt, while one sustained injuries.”

Two officers were saved. “Inspector Uba Ahmed, who was also rescued, suffered gunshot injury on his leg. Both the injured officer and the expatriate are currently receiving treatment and responding to treatment at FMC, Abakaliki,” the statement read. On Saturday, 5 April, a tactical team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the scene to continue rescue efforts, freeing Inspector Ijeagwa Friday unhurt with help from local residents.

The bodies of the deceased are now in a morgue. Police have launched an investigation to track down the attackers and ensure justice.
