Senate confirms Bala Bello as AMCON chairman, approves five non-executive directors

The senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Bala Bello as the part-time chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), representing the north-east.

The senate also confirmed the appointment of five other nominees as non-executive directors of AMCON.

Their confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of the report of the senate committee on banking, insurance, and other financial institutions during plenary.

While presenting the report, Osita Izunaso, senator representing Imo west, spoke on behalf of the committee chairman and urged the senate to confirm the nominees.

“The committee engaged with the nominees extensively and was satisfied with their experience, performance, and academic qualifications,” Izunazo said.

“There were no petitions against them, and they have been cleared by security agencies, including the police and the DSS.”

The confirmed non-executive directors include Yusuf Sule (north-central), Adeyemo Stephen (south-west), Yahaya Ibrahim (north-west), Odion Iyare (south-south) and Emily Osuji (south-east).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the committee for its thorough screening process.

“I appreciate the committee members for their work in ensuring a detailed screening,” Akpabio said.

“We hope that the new AMCON leadership will bring fresh energy and commitment to their responsibilities.”
