Glo lowers call tariff to 22k/s

Mobile network operator (MNO) Globacom yesterday announced a reduction in its call tariff.

The tariff cut came at a time other operators are raising their call tariff in line with the January 50 per cent adjustment to end-user tariff of telecom services by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Following the NCC approval, the average call per minute stands between N13.80k per minute and N23k per second.

In a Short Message Service (SMS) on its network, Globacom said: “Dear Customer, we have recently adjusted our Tariff to serve you better.

“Your voice call rate has been reduced to 22k/s to all networks, making calls more affordable. Your existing Berekete bonus balance is valid and will expire by 12th March 2025. To check your available Berekete bonus balance, dial 3102#. Thank you for choosing Glo.”

A source in the telco confirmed that indeed, a voice tariff plan in the telco’s basket of tariff plans exists.

The source said: “It is not fake news. Since it was sent from the backend of the network and it is not asking the customer to click a link or disclose their personal information, there is nothing therefore to fret about.”

A check on the network showed that SMS tariff has largely remained unchanged. While Glo and MTN Nigeria are still charging N4 per SMS, Airtel Nigeria is charging N6per SMS, reflecting the 50 per cent adjustment.

The telecom service provider, in a statement, said it has deepened its nationwide network upgrade in its bid to ensure excellent service delivery to its millions of customers.

In its reactions to the recent raise in telecom tariffs, Globacom said it was resolute in building a world class telecoms infrastructure and offering its customers the most affordable rates for voice and data services. It added that the network upgrade entails the entire scope of telecoms infrastructure upgrade, from the core network to access network, transmission and IP network, fiber network, metro access and backbone infrastructure as well as passive equipment expansion like power and environment.

The firm said the current phase of network upgrade which was launched last year involves nationwide rollout of new base transceiver stations and upgrade of existing ones to foster high speed and enhanced data experience to its burgeoning mass of subscribers.

It said the upgrade was embarked upon to expand network capacity, provide more resources for subscribers for enhanced voice and data and also boost customer experience in places where there are network congestions.

Similarly, hundreds of LTE 2600 sites were injected into key markets of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Kwara and in select tertiary institutions in Rivers, Edo, Abuja, Enugu and Anambra States in order to improve high speed data in the areas and to eradicate congestions in the network.

In support of the broadband penetration initiative of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy and the Federal Government of Nigeria, Globacom has also created additional data network capacity and carried out enhancements across 1700 sites particularly in Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau states.

According to the company, the move will shore up customer satisfaction in data throughput or data speed, and ultimately improve customers’ network experience and satisfaction in terms of service delivery, network quality and coverage.

Beside, hundreds of new sites comprising 2G, 3G and 4G base stations are being included to boost coverage and enhance capacity demand across the country.

This will ultimately improve customer’s network experience and satisfaction in terms of service delivery, network quality and coverage.

To support the expansion projects and ensure seamless access by Glo customers to ultra-high speed, the Glo1 submarine cable capacity was recently upgraded to ensure maximum utilisation.

It will effectively back up the technical expansions and upgrades, thus ensuring unique calling and browsing experience on the Glo network at all times.

Glo added that it had also started an extensive nationwide drive to change its power and fiber infrastructure by deploying thousands of new generators and replacing thousands of kilometers of its old fiber routes while laying new fiber routes
