MTN Reverses 15GB Weekly Data Hike Amid Public Backlash

MTN Nigeria has scrapped its controversial 15GB weekly data bundle price increase, following widespread outrage from subscribers.

The telecom giant had raised the cost of the promotional plan from N2,000 to N6,000 earlier this week, triggering backlash across social media.

In a message to customers on Thursday, MTN acknowledged the frustration caused by the abrupt change. “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story,” the company said.

The network provider issued an apology and urged subscribers to “forgive and forget,” emphasising its commitment to customer satisfaction.

A review of the MoMo and myMTN apps confirmed that the 15GB weekly bundle is no longer available.

This incident comes as Nigerian telecom operators, including MTN, begin implementing a broader tariff hike on data and call services.

The adjustment follows regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, allowing operators to raise prices by up to 50 percent.
