Niger: Police arrest three vigilantes over alleged murder of 30-year-old man

The Niger State Police Command has arrested three vigilantes over the alleged murder of Muhammadu Bello, a 30-year-old man from Awala village in Rijau Local Government Area (LGA).

The suspects, identified as Habibu Usman (35), Tanko Abara (25), and Maigero Abdullahi (26), all from Tunga-Galadima village in Rijau LGA, were apprehended on January 16, 2025, by operatives attached to the Kontagora Area Command.

The state Commissioner of Police, Shawulu E. Danmamman, disclosed this in a statement he personally signed.

“The suspects were arrested for culpable homicide of one Muhammadu Bello (30) of Awala village, Rijau LGA. It was reported that on December 8, 2024, at about 1300hrs, the said victim was at a vigilante point at Tunga-Galadima village with his Bajaj motorcycle, coming from Kontagora and heading to Rijau with about N940,000 in his possession. Since then, the victim was nowhere to be found until his lifeless body was recovered on January 13, 2025, in a nearby bush close to the vigilante point,” Danmamman stated.

He further revealed that one of the suspects, Habibu Usman, confessed that a vigilante member named Lawal, who is currently at large, had shot the victim at the checkpoint.

“Therefore, the vigilante men were strongly suspected, while the three suspects mentioned above were arrested. Habibu Usman confessed that one of them, known as Lawal, presently at large, had shot an innocent person dead from the checkpoint,” he added.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend three other suspected accomplices, Lawal, Jibrin, and Bako who are still at large, according to the police commissioner.
