1 Dies In Lagos Dawn Accident

A yet-to-be-identified driver of the Lagos Intra-City bus died in an early morning accident on Wednesday, 8th January 2025.

According to a statement made available to LEADERSHIP by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the accident happened near the state Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos.

Adebayo said the incident involved a minibus which collided with a moving long truck due to brake failure resulting from excessive speeding.

The severe impact of the crash left the driver of the minibus trapped within the wreckage.

Adebayo, however, stated that the swift and coordinated intervention of LASTMA Officers ensured the immediate rescue of other passengers, all of whom emerged unscathed.

“In a collaborative effort, LASTMA Officers, alongside Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel and the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), worked relentlessly to extricate the trapped driver. Regrettably, despite their commendable efforts, the driver was recovered lifeless. His remains were subsequently handed over to FRSC personnel by LASTMA Officers.

“Security operatives from the Alausa Police Division were present to protect the duration of the rescue operations,” Adebayo said.

However, speaking about the accident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki warned against excessive speeding and urged road users to adhere strictly to safety rules.

Bakare-Oki also highlighted the paramount importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly in maintaining safe speeds and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a profound reminder of the dire consequences of reckless driving. We implore all road users to prioritise safety and exercise utmost caution while on the road,” he stated.

He extended LASTMA’s deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and reiterated the agency’s unwavering dedication to promoting safer roads and preventing avoidable tragedies.
