Ibadan stampede: School principal detained following death of 32 children

The principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Abdullahi Fasasi has reportedly been detained following the stampede that claimed the lives of 32 children.

Daily Sun reported that tragedy marred a private children’s funfair at the aforementioned school on Wednesday, as confirmed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

It was gathered that the event was intended for 5,000 participants but attracted over 7,500 attendees, leading to a chaotic scene that resulted in the stampede.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that parents and children rushed to enter the venue and ended up trapped in the crush at the main gate, with many of them unable to escape the crowd.

32 children were confirmed dead in the unfortunate incident.

The latest reports reveal that Fasasi was invited by the police on Wednesday and has been in detention since then.

Per a source with knowledge of the tragedy, the principal was detained upon arrival and is being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the Iyaganku area.

“The principal of the school, Mr Abdullahi Fasasi, has been detained by the police. He was invited around 4:00 p.m. yesterday, and he honoured the invitation.

“He has been detained since then. He has not been released,” the source revealed.
