Ethnic groups champion regionalism, new name for Nigeria

Major ethnic groups across the country have said only regionalism and parliamentary system of government can solve the country’s numerous challenges.

The groups under the aegis of The Rebirth Group,TRG, made this known in a communique made available to DAILY POST at the end of a symposium in Kaduna State.

It was learnt that the symposium titled, ‘Envisioning Nigeria’s Future: Addressing the National Question’, was convened by Owolabi Oladejo.

The groups also suggested that the country should be renamed and changed from Nigeria to United Regions of Nigeria, URN.

The communique jointly signed by Comrade Jare Ajayi, Mr. DIY Nweze and Mr. Olaolu Abogunloko said The Rebirth Group resolved that Nigeria should be reorganised into regions, stating that such moves would end some of the challenges the country is facing.

The communique explained that restructuring into regions “is not meant to abrogate states that we have presently.

“The Regions would form the Federating units to make the country to be known as United Regions of Nigeria, URN or any other nomenclature that we find convenient”.

The group further explained that in the proposed regional government, each region is expected to have its own “constitution and be autonomous”.

“This is to ensure that they are in a proper position to operationalize self-determination.
