JUST IN: NEMA provides update on five passengers missing in helicopter crash

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it is intensifying search and rescue operations following the tragic helicopter crash that occurred yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The helicopter, which was en route to an oil rig, disappeared over the Bight of Benin around 14:00, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including crew members.

Initial reports suggested the crash site was near Uyo, prompting NEMA’s Uyo Operation Office to mobilize search teams.

However, with assistance from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the wreckage was later identified near Bonny Island in Rivers State.

“By 16:30, the wreckage was located, three bodies were recovered.

“SITREP as at this afternoon, NEMA is collaborating with the Nigerian Air Force in an on-going search and rescue efforts to locate the remaining 5 persons on board the ill fated helicopter and recover their bodies from the sea,” the agency wrote on its official X handle.
