Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, says granting full autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government areas (LGAs) could lead to “humongous chaos”.
Soludo stated this on Tuesday at the Governor’s Lodge in Awka, the state capital after he signed the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law 2024, passed by the State House of Assembly last Thursday.
Relying on the provisions of the Supreme Court judgement that prescribed structured collaboration for all tiers of government, the governor maintained that the Anambra State Government and the local governments in the state will collaborate to provide all government functions including security and welfare.
“No tier of government enjoys absolute autonomy,” Soludo declared, saying only a collaborative framework will guarantee people-centred governance.
The new legislation requires the 21 local governments in Anambra to remit a portion of their federal allocations into a consolidated account managed by the state government.
