Senate okays new Police Service Commission boss, Argungu, others

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Argungu (retd.) as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The Red Chamber also approved the nomination of Chief Oyemuche Nnamani as the Secretary of the PSC.

Also approved was the nomination of Barr. Frederick Taiwo Larkamu as a member of the commission.

President Bola Tinubu had forwarded the names of the nominees to the Senate for confirmation.

Senate President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, while speaking after the confirmation, congratulated the nominees.

The also commended senators for taking their time to look at the past records of the nominees and recommending them for confirmation.

Akpabio called on the PSC and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to end their squabbles over recruitments into the force.

Akpabio expressed disappointment that it took the intervention of the Supreme Court for the fight to be resolved in a recent judgment.

Also speaking, former Senate President, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, recalled how the supremacy tussle between the two organs held police recruitment down for two years with attendant implications for the security challenges the country faced.

He noted that by tradition, 10,000 police personnel were to be recruited yearly, adding that while the dispute between the PSC and the leadership of the police lasted, the force was hit by manpower shortfalls.
