Drug trafficking charge: Court rejects Abba Kyari’s fresh request for bail

Abba Kyari, a detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, had his fresh bail application dismissed by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court ruled that the application lacked merit, citing the lack of exceptional circumstances that would warrant intervention.

The ruling comes after Kyari was previously denied bail twice, and he failed to provide evidence to justify deviating from the court’s earlier decision.

The court had earlier ordered accelerated hearing of the case and refused to grant bail to Kyari and his co-defendants.Kyari is facing an eight-count charge of drug trafficking along with four other police officers.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) alleges that they tampered with seized cocaine and dealt in illegal drugs.

The alleged offenses took place between January 19 and 25, 2022, at the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja.

The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are currently being remanded at Kuje prison.
