Lagos-based lawyer, Ohemu Boni, has petitioned the National Assembly over the mysterious death of Inspector Sunday Peter, a member of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command.
According to the petition, which was received on Friday at the Senate President’s and Speaker’s offices, Peter was on patrol with his team on May 16, 2024, in Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos State. However, his family was informed of his death the next morning, but was met with a lack of transparency regarding the cause of his death.
The family’s attempts to see Peter’s body were initially unsuccessful, but after being permitted by the RRS Commander, they discovered that he had died under unclear circumstances. The only information provided by the police was that Peter had complained of uneasiness and was taken to the Police Hospital in Falomo, Lagos, where he died.
However, Boni alleges that Peter was already dead before being taken to the hospital and that there may have been foul play involved in his death. He points out that bruises, cuts, and blood were found on Peter’s body, suggesting that his colleagues may be concealing information about his death.
The lawyer is calling on the National Assembly to intervene and demand a thorough investigation into Peter’s death, including an autopsy examination to determine the real cause of his death. He also requests that the Inspector General of Police direct a discreet investigation into the matter.
The family is said to be in shock and trauma over Peter’s death, which has caused them great pain and distress.
