Police to establish full drone system to tackle security challenges

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced that the Nigeria Police Force will soon implement a comprehensive drone system to effectively address the nation’s security challenges.

Egbetokun made this statement during the first distinguished Personality Lecture, hosted by the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies (TCEMS) at the University of Ibadan (UI) on Monday in Ibadan.According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the lecture was titled “The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security.”

Egbetokun stated, “While the force already has some drones, we will now establish a full drone system to monitor the entire country from our headquarters in Abuja.”

He noted that this system would enable the police to observe criminals in the act, asserting that “ungoverned spaces will soon become governed.”

He also mentioned plans to establish a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in all states to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities.

He highlighted the success of the SIS in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where their deployment has led to the arrest of numerous kidnappers and bandits and the recovery of weapons.

These units have also conducted several successful rescue operations, ensuring the safe return of kidnapped victims and the apprehension of offenders.

Egbetokun pointed out challenges faced by the force, such as manpower shortages, inadequate equipment, public distrust, and insufficient budgetary provisions, but reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens.In his remarks, UI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kayode Adebowale praised the Inspector-General for his visionary leadership in addressing the nation’s security issues.

Additionally, Dr. Benjamin Aluko, the acting Director of TCEMS, emphasized that the lecture aimed to provoke constructive discussions to improve the country’s security situation.
