EFCC Arrests Man in Gombe for Spraying Naira Notes at Social Event

The Gombe Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Zachariyya Muhammad for abusing the Nigerian currency in Gombe State.

According to a statement posted by the EFCC on X.com on Wednesday, Muhammad was presented with a video showing him dancing and spraying N200 notes, which he admitted to.

The statement read, “Muhammad was arrested on Saturday, May 25, 2024, based on intelligence linking him to the alleged spraying of Naira notes at G-Connect in Tunfure, Gombe State. Upon his arrest, he was shown a video where he was dancing and spraying Naira notes in N200 denomination. He admitted to being the one in the video.”

The EFCC added that Muhammad will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.

This arrest is part of the EFCC’s ongoing crackdown on the abuse of the naira, as spraying and mishandling banknotes are considered offences under Nigerian law.

Last Wednesday, the EFCC arrested a woman named Janty Emmanuel following intelligence reports that identified her spraying Naira notes at a social event, which she admitted to.

In April 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos State sentenced controversial crossdresser Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for abusing the naira.
