The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils in the state, granting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf the sole authority to appoint new Emirs.
This decision followed deliberations during a plenary session on Thursday. The Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill was considered and passed after its second and third readings that morning.
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu explained that repealing the law would restore Kano’s lost glory, as the division of the Kano Emirate into five had diminished the state’s capacity and dignity at the national level.
Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala stated that the emirate council, which traditionally served as a custodian of culture, had its role distorted by the creation of additional emirates.
Speaking to journalists, Dala clarified that with the amendment of the law, all five emirate councils were abolished, and the Commissioner for Local Governments would now act as the overseer.
Additionally, the house adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state.
