One Dead and Property Damaged in Fire at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School

A fire at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School in Awka, Anambra State, claimed the life of one student and caused significant property damage on Saturday night.

The cause of the fire, which broke out around 11:30 p.m., remains unknown. The blaze severely damaged the school’s hostel, destroying mattresses and other belongings.

The victim, a student, was taken to a mortuary following the incident.

The Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. Fire Service Chief Chukwudi Chiketa said that firefighters and a fire truck were immediately dispatched to the scene and managed to contain the fire.

Chief Chiketa visited the school on Sunday to inspect the damage. The school principal, Ven. Dr. Emendu, described how the fire ravaged part of the hostel, destroying everything inside and resulting in the tragic death of one student. No other casualties or injuries were reported.

“The Anambra State Fire Service Chief arrived at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School, Awka, at 10:55 a.m. on Sunday, for a firsthand inspection and assessment of the level of damages caused by the fire outbreak that occurred on Saturday night in the school,” the statement read.

“The cause of this fire is still unknown, but it’s confirmed that one of the students died at the scene and has been taken to a mortuary,” it continued.

Dr. Emendu commended the fire service for their prompt response, which prevented the fire from spreading further.

Chief Chiketa expressed his condolences to the school community and the family of the deceased student. He acknowledged the pain of losing a child, especially in such tragic circumstances, and prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family.

In his statement, Chief Chiketa also advised the public to remain vigilant and safety-conscious, emphasizing that while fire can be deadly, it can also be controlled with proper precautions.
