On Thursday, an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti ordered the remand of 25-year-old Olamide Oni in correctional custody for allegedly abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl.
Police prosecutor Inspector Raymond Osas told the court that Oni was “reasonably suspected” of committing the offences between January 13 and May 10, 2024, within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District. He explained, “The offences are contrary to Sections 276 and 265(2) of the Criminal Law 2021.” Although the charges were read and explained to Oni, the court did not take his plea.
In her statement to the police, the victim recounted how Oni had invited her from Ado Ekiti to Ibadan, Oyo State, where she ended up staying with him at a guest house in Ibadan and later in Lagos from January to May. She said, “When I could no longer cope with the situation because he was having sexual intercourse with me every day, I gave my parents’ phone number to someone to help me contact them. They eventually came to Lagos, arrested the defendant, and brought me back to Ado Ekiti.”
Inspector Osas mentioned that the duplicate case file had been sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and requested the court to remand Oni to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti pending the issuance of the legal advice.
Magistrate Olu Bamidele ordered Oni’s remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti for 30 days, pending legal advice from the DPP. The case was adjourned to June 20, 2024, for mention.
