Catholic Archdiocese Orders Closure of School After Gunmen Attack

Following a recent attack by unidentified gunmen, the Catholic Archdiocese of Makurdi, Benue State, has issued a directive for the immediate closure of Father Angus Frazer Memorial High School in Adeke, Makurdi.

The assault, which occurred late on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, prompted a swift response from personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, preventing any loss of life. However, one security officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

In a press statement released on May 8, 2024, Very Rev. Fr. Moses Iorapuu, the Director of Social Communications of the Diocese, announced the suspension of all school activities until further notice.

The decision was made in consideration of the safety of the students, with Fr. Iorapuu stating, “Following the attack on Father Angus Frazer Memorial High School by unidentified gunmen, the Diocese of Makurdi ordered the immediate suspension of activities at the school to protect the lives of the students.”

Emphasizing the need for preventive measures to avert potential disaster, the statement praised the swift response of school authorities and security personnel.

The Diocese further tasked the Director of Catholic Education Service with engaging relevant stakeholders and urged priests and pastoral units to bolster security measures around their premises.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about security in areas like Welfare Quarters at Utuur Layout, Phase 3 of Makurdi, which has sadly become known for frequent attacks, killings, and kidnappings, allegedly perpetrated by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
