FAAN launches investigation to ascertain cause of fire at Lagos airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has initiated an investigation into a fire incident that occurred on Thursday at the E54 bridge of Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja. In a statement by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, efforts are underway to ventilate the smoke from the building.

Orah noted that the smoke was observed billowing from the E54 passenger Bridge, prompting electrical engineers to promptly cut off power to the entire E Wing. The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team responded swiftly, arriving at the scene by 5:30 a.m.

While initial suspicions suggest sparks from an electrical unit as the cause, a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Despite the situation escalating into a fire, it was brought under control by 6:41 a.m. Efforts to clear the building of smoke are ongoing. In the interim, all flight operations in Terminal 1 of the Murtala Mohammed Airport have been redirected to the D Wing.

Orah assured that further details would be provided as the investigation progresses.
