Crowdfunding: Nigerians raise money for lady who embraced prostitution to raise goitre surgery fee

Nigerians have come together to raise funds for a 26-year-old woman who turned to prostitution out of desperation to cover the cost of her goitre surgery. The woman, whose name could not be ascertained, appeared in a video where she was interviewed by a street comedian, Comicmiss2. Struggling with health challenges, she shared her story in the viral video interview, igniting a wave of empathy and support across social media platforms.

In the video, she can be heard saying she didn’t join “hookup” for pleasure. “Hookup” is a term commonly used to describe casual sexual encounters or relationships, often in exchange for payment. She showed a swelling in her throat and revealed that she started raising money for surgery since November 2023. She said, “I started in November 2023. I have made money, but I have this health issue. This is the major thing that brought me to the street. To get money and pull it out. I know that God will surely help me.”

When asked how much she has raised, she explained that “the money I have saved is in my sister’s account. I have around 150k now.” She revealed that the last time she checked, the cost was N700,000, but she had no idea if the fee had changed. “I swear on my mum’s grave, I will stop doing it. There is no life in hookup. Because I am doing it doesn’t mean that’s what I wish to do,” she added.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have taken to the internet space asking for ways to raise money to help her with her surgery. A quick check on the Facebook page of Comicmiss2 showed that the street comedian posted her account details after calls from many of her followers. “We’ve raised only 36k. Guys, please your help will go a long way,” she wrote in her last message on Sunday. Although many of her followers chided her for posting her own personal account number, she explained that she’s been trying to reach the lady in the video but to no avail. “I’ve been trying to reach her since morning to drop her account, but her number is not connecting, so someone suggested I drop mine to ensure she had the surgery. So, I did that this evening, though it’s late, but God can do something,” she wrote.
