DJ Commissioner Wysei, not DJ Switch, arrested – Lagos police

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a public apology following a mix-up in the alleged arrest of popular Nigerian disc jockey, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, also known as DJ Switch. State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, conveyed the apology via his X handle on Thursday, clarifying that the arrested DJ was actually “DJ Commissioner Wysei,” not DJ Switch. Hundeyin acknowledged the inconvenience caused to media outfits such as Linda Ikeji, BBC, and TVC, who were mistakenly given confirmation of DJ Switch’s arrest.

It was reported that several media outlets had erroneously published news of DJ Switch’s arrest by operatives of the Nigeria Police. One of the reports stated that the female disc jockey was apprehended for allegedly obstructing police duties, resisting arrest, and assaulting officers.

According to the report, DJ Switch had visited the police station in Elemoro, Ajah, on Monday, April 15, to report a man who allegedly defrauded her. However, allegations emerged that she obstructed officers from taking the accused to court and assaulted a female officer assigned to the case.

DJ Switch gained prominence in 2020 when she livestreamed on her Instagram page the shooting of protesters by Nigerian Army personnel at the Lekki Toll Gate during the #EndSARS protest.

Responding to the news via her X handle on Thursday morning, DJ Switch refuted reports of her arrest. She emphasized her disapproval of violence against the police, criticizing media outlets for spreading false information without proper investigation. DJ Switch demanded a retraction of the false news, accusing the outlets of defamation of character.

Later, DJ Switch acknowledged the State PPRO’s apology, expressing acceptance of the apology.
