A violent clash marred the recent Sallah celebration in Bauchi, resulting in the death of at least four individuals, including the son of a traditional ruler.
Reports indicate that the clash erupted between two local security factions: the Yan Ba Beli, an armed group combating banditry, and a contingent of hunters accompanying the District Head of Miri. The confrontation left numerous individuals wounded.
The incident unfolded during a traditional procession to the Government House on Wednesday when members of the Yan Ba Beli group reportedly disrupted the procession, sparking a confrontation. Allegedly, the Yan Ba Beli members instigated the disruption unprovoked, assaulting horse riders with sticks, which incited the anger of the traditional ruler’s entourage.
In retaliation, the hunters accompanying the District Head discharged their dane guns into the air, reportedly striking two members of the Yan Ba Beli group, further intensifying the clash.
Amidst the chaos, the son of the District Head sustained a fatal head injury from a sharp object, resulting in his demise.
As of the time of writing, the police are yet to officially confirm the incident. However, State Governor Sen Bala Mohammed paid a condolence visit to the Palace of the District Head of Miri, Mal Hussaini Abubakar, on Saturday evening, expressing his sympathies over the loss of his son, Muhammadu Ghani.
