Covenant beats UI, FUTA to retain Nigeria’s best varsity spot

Covenant University has once again emerged as the top-ranked university in Nigeria, surpassing both the University of Ibadan and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, according to the 2024 rankings by Times Higher Education. This marks the second time the university, located in Ota, Ogun State, has achieved this distinction, solidifying its position among the top 1,000 universities worldwide.

Ranked at 801 globally, Covenant University initially gained recognition in 2018 when it was named the best university in Nigeria and the sixth-best overall. Following closely behind is the University of Ibadan as the second-best university in the country, with the Federal University of Technology, Akure, securing the third spot.

Times Higher Education’s World University ranking encompasses 1,904 universities spanning 108 countries and regions. Their methodology, WUR 3.0, evaluates institutions based on five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry connections, and international outlook.

In addition to Covenant University, other Nigerian universities achieving top rankings include the University of Ilorin, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Afe Babalola University, among others. Notably, nine of the top 15 universities are located in the South West region, reflecting the academic prowess and diversity of Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
