Six people have been declared missing after a small plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean in the United States, near the coast of San Diego, California, on Sunday afternoon.
The aircraft, a Cessna 414, went down around 12:45pm, approximately three miles west of Point Loma, shortly after departing from San Diego International Airport.
The plane was bound for Phoenix, Arizona.
Rescue operations were swiftly launched by the U.S. Coast Guard, which deployed aircraft and boats to the crash site.
San Diego lifeguards and U.S. Border Patrol officials also joined the search efforts.
“Initial debris recovered by lifeguards have been turned over to Coast Guard authorities,” San Diego Fire and Rescue said in a statement.
The National Transportation Safety Board has commenced an investigation into the incident.
Eyewitness Tyson Wislofsky described the plane’s final moments to NBC 7. “I saw him come down at an angle.
He wasn’t flying straight to the ground,” he said.
“The next time he came out of the clouds, he went straight into the water. But after I saw this splash, about six seconds later, it was dead silent. I knew that they went in the water, nose first, at a high speed.”
The plane is registered to Optimal Health Systems, a vitamin and supplement company based in Pima, Arizona.
It remains unknown whether any company employees were on board at the time of the crash.
The company is owned by Douglas Grant and his wife Hilary Kit. Calls to both by Daily Mail were not answered as of Monday morning.
