South Korean Military Drone Collides With Helicopter At Airfield

A South Korean military drone collided with a stationary helicopter at an airfield in Yangju, north of Seoul, on Monday, causing a fire that was swiftly extinguished.

The country’s defence ministry confirmed that the incident resulted in no casualties, and the fire was brought under control within approximately 20 minutes.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the drone involved in the accident was an Israeli-made Heron, a large reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used for surveillance operations. The report also noted that there was no interference from North Korea in the form of GPS jamming at the time of the collision.

This is not the first incident involving the Heron drone in the area. In November last year, the same type of UAV crashed in a nearby location, raising concerns over operational safety.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
