MTN acquisition of IHS Towers under review – Communications Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has confirmed that it is reviewing MTN Group’s acquisition of IHS Towers to assess its implications for Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
In a statement, the Ministry said the evaluation will be carried out in collaboration with relevant regulators to determine the potential impact of the deal on competition, consumers, and long-term sector stability.
It noted that in the past two years, reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration have strengthened the telecom industry through clearer policies, regulatory support, and sustained stakeholder engagement. According to the Ministry, recent financial results from operators indicate improved profitability, increased infrastructure investment, and greater operational stability.
Describing telecommunications infrastructure as critical to national security, economic growth, financial services, and social inclusion, the Ministry stressed that any market consolidation must protect consumer interests, safeguard investments, and support sustainable development.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a transparent policy environment aligned with Nigeria’s broader digital economy objectives.
