No One was Arrested or Detained – Osun Amotekun Reacts
By Sola Isola
The Osun Amotekun Corps has debunked allegations against it that its operatives arrested and detained one Taiwo Olaore and that the said Olaore was brutally beaten and charmed, describing the allegation as untrue and baseless, Affairs TV News reports.
A statement by its Public Relations Officer, Idowu Abass and obtained by Affairs TV News on Thursday in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, noted that Olaore was invited to respond to the allegation of cyberbullying levied against him and was subsequently handed over to the Police.
The statement further noted that Olaore voluntarily came to the Amotekun office for questioning, adding that at no time was he rough-handled, charmed or beaten.
The statement reads, “The attention of the Osun Amotekun Corps has been drawn to a series of misleading posts circulating on social media, alleging that personnel of the Corps charmed and physically assaulted one Mr. Olaore Taiwo in Iragbiji prior to his alleged arrest. These claims are entirely false, baseless, and misleading, and we wish to set the record straight.
“We categorically state that no officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps charmed or assaulted Mr. Olaore Taiwo at any time. Contrary to the claims being circulated, Mr. Taiwo was not arrested. He was invited for questioning following a formal complaint lodged against him regarding cyberbullying activities directed at the Corps.
“It is important to clarify that this invitation was in response to defamatory content posted by Mr. Taiwo on social media, in which he made unverified and damaging accusations against the Osun Amotekun Corps, including claims of extortion. His actions are not only false but constitute a breach of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. Specifically, Section 24 of the Act criminalizes cyberbullying, online harassment, defamation, and other related offenses.
“Following his invitation, Mr. Taiwo voluntarily presented himself to our office, was interviewed in a civil and professional manner, and he was thereafter released to the Police at the Headquarters Osogbo for further action. At no point was he detained, assaulted, or subjected to any form of physical or mystical harm as falsely alleged.
“We wish to remind the public that the Osun Amotekun Corps is a law-abiding and apolitical organization. Our mandate is rooted in the protection of lives and property, especially within local communities across Osun State. We operate in full compliance with the Nigerian Constitution and the laws that govern our establishment.
“The Corps views these unfounded allegations as an attempt by certain individuals to discredit our operations, undermine our public trust, and politicize our activities. We urge members of the public to disregard these false narratives and refrain from sharing or endorsing unverified information that could jeopardize public safety or incite unrest.
“Osun Amotekun remains committed to community policing, with transparency, professionalism, and accountability at the heart of our operations. We will not be deterred by false allegations and will continue to discharge our duties with integrity.
“We appreciate the continued support of the good people of Osun State and encourage everyone to report issues through appropriate channels, rather than resorting to social media smear campaigns.”
