Grandson kills septuagenarian over farm in Osun

A 78-year-old grandfather, Akanbi Adedoyin, has been allegedly killed by his grandson, Kusibe, who struck his head with a plank during a disagreement over a farm in the Ilare-Ijesha community, Osun State.

It was gathered that residents in the area, who heard the old man crying for help, rushed to the scene and rescued him.

A resident of Ilare-Ijesa, who was part of those who arrived rushed to the scene but refused to disclose his name for safety reasons, said the residents rushed the injured grandfather to a government health facility in the town for urgent treatment.

The resident said, “But we were told to move him to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, for more treatment because of the severity of the wounds but we could not move him. There was no money for further treatment.

“He eventually died two days later. I arrived at the scene of the crime early but there was no one with the grandfather and Kusibe when the incident happened. We heard the noise and rushed down.

“The old man said Kusibe hit him on the head. He lost so much blood. We were told to go to Wesley Guild Ilesa but we could not. The man eventually died. The incident happened on Monday but the grandfather died on Wednesday.”

Another resident of Ilare, identified simply as Oludele, said people who rushed to the scene immediately after the incident, arrested Kusibe and handed him over to operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, from where he was transferred to the Esa Oke Division of the state police command.

The Owalare of Ilare, Oba Adejoro Otebolaku, while commenting on the incident in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, urged the police to ensure justice was served in the matter to serve as deterrent.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said an investigation by the police revealed that Kusibe attacked his grandfather over a disagreement on farm ownership.

She said, “It is true. Kusibe allegedly hit the grandfather, 78, on the head after an argument bordering on ownership of farmland. He was arrested and taken to court. The court has remanded him in a custodial centre. The incident happened on Monday but the grandfather died on Wednesday.”
