Cleric bags life jail for raping minor in Ekiti

In a landmark judgment, the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti has sentenced Pastor Enoch, the cleric of a church in Omuo Ekiti, to life imprisonment for raping a minor. The victim, who is the daughter of a church member, was repeatedly attacked by the pastor during her visits to his residence.

The young girl would often visit the pastor’s house to help with household chores and assist with school assignments for the pastor’s children. However, during one of these visits, the pastor allegedly sedated her with a bottle of Fanta, causing her to fall asleep. She woke up to find herself bleeding profusely from her private parts.

The Ekiti State Director of Public Prosecutions, Julius Ajibade, who prosecuted the case, presented four witnesses and two exhibits to prove the pastor’s guilt.

The defendant, who was represented by counsel Adeyinka Opaleke, called only one witness in his defense.

In his judgment, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi concluded that the prosecution had successfully proved the offence of rape against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt. Consequentially, the pastor was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

This verdict serves as a stark reminder of the severity of sexual violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
